LIV-a-Little Project
The pupils of Umhlanga College are hard at work raising funds to contribute towards the LIV Children's Village that is currently being built on the North Coast. After the pupils had heard of the thousands of children that are in need in our province and watched an inspiring performance by the Watoto Children's Choir, the school formulated a fundraising programme with a hands-on approach for the children.
Each pupil has pledged to "LIV a Little" by contributing R10 a month to this project. The money must be earned by performing odd jobs and tasks at home, thereby instilling a culture of generosity and social responsibility amongst the pupils. One lad came into school with his R10 in R2 coins. He mentioned that he had been paid R2 for each of 5 chores his mum gave him to do, in order to raise his contribution. Another child, donated a portion of her winnings, from an ice-skating competition in which she had recently excelled. The Senior Primary children receive a wooden block, representing a brick, for each R10 they bring in and are currently building a model village to keep track of their progress.
Our Junior Primary children are watching their coloured handprints grow into a beautiful rainbow as they bring in their R10's each month.
Umhlanga College has managed to raise approximately R4000 for the LIV village so far and the pupils have pledged their support through until the end of the school year.
